The Number One Key To My Success
And why I never quit this business...
Hey ,
You already know that one conversation, one handshake, one meetup can be the spark that sets off a chain reaction of success. This week’s newsletter is covering just that (and a couple recommendations if you don’t know where to start)…
Inside the Trenches
It’s December 1st, 2016.
I am sitting with my team doing our weekly meeting and reviewing all the of the active rehab projects we had going on (averaging 17-23 at a time for years)…I look at my team, and simply say "Let's start a meetup!"
Networking has been the number one key to my success in this business.
It's how I have met all of my hard money lenders, private money lenders, JV partners, wholesalers, real estate agents, title agents, contractors, team members, and more importantly...other peers and my mentors.
Whenever I need more deals, I go network to meet more wholesalers and agents. I need more private money lenders? I go network, ask for referrals and meet more people.
However, if it wasn't for meeting peers in this business and the people I look up to (mentors), I would have quit this business a long time ago.
…Who do you call when sh*t hits the fan?
…Who do you call when you get your first red tag and you have no clue what to do?
…Who do you call to celebrate with when you net your first 100k on a flip?
…Who will be happy for you and relate?
Peers, other investors, our tribe.
I was doing a webinar with my BFF Brandon Turner a few days ago, and in that webinar we both realized that him and I met at a event in 2015.
In fact, him and I met at a meetup in Lakewood Washington, at a restaurant called The Ram. I would drive 45 min from where I lived to go to this meetup monthly in order to meet new wholesalers (that’s how I got most my deals), and there he was...Mr. Brandon Turner.
…Before he was the famous Brandon, still kind of a B list real estate celebrity, but on his way to be a solid B+.
Him and I hit it off and eventually became BFFs. We've hosted multiple events together, been through a lot emotionally together in our personal lives, and he is the god father of my son. All of this happened because of going to a meetup, meeting a peer, relating to each other in our business problems, and helping each other in our businesses (more than once) when sh*t hit the fan.
It's funny — pretty much all of my closest friends, I have met at events.
Not only friends, but business partners as well. Brandon and I have a business together. My two partners in my current real estate business (Fixated Capital) I met at events. All of the backing for my lending business (Fixated Funding) I met at events. And I currently have a business with Ken McElroy, who I met at an event in 2019.
Look, I am not an extrovert and networking isn't always easy for me, and it may not be easy for you.
I am by default, an introvert. Yet, I have learned to become a 'professional extrovert' in order to further my business and investment career.
For some of you reading this, networking may not come easy for you…
If that’s the case, I recommend starting out with smaller groups or even joining a small mastermind of some sort.
If that’s tough, you can even network on BiggerPockets forums and then meet some people from coffee in your local market. Make some friends!
Events are also where I get a lot of my market data and ideas. But if the only reason to go to an event is to sit and listen to speakers, you are leaving a lot of value on the table.
If you are interested in surrounding yourself with top investors, entrepreneurs, other go-getters, and more importantly, people that are in the trenches trying to figure out what to do next to improve their business and their families financial future...
Then there is event coming up in 60 days that Ken McElroy and I created — The Limitless Expo.
Ken and I created this event so that we can help ourselves figure out what to do next in our businesses, surround ourselves with other people getting after it, and invite experts that we can learn from.
The world has so much uncertainty right now, and the Limitless Expo can give you certainty with where to take your business next.
Consider this an invitation! I’d love to see you there.
